US President Donald Trump said Monday he will sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia on the eve of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman’s highly anticipated Washington visit, his first to the United States in more than seven years.
“I will say that that we will be doing that,” Trump said when asked if he would sell the jets to Saudi Arabia. “We’ll be selling F-35s.”
The sale of the fighter jets is one of several major deals between the two countries expected to be announced during the visit.
Saudi Arabia is the largest customer for US arms and the Trump administration has signaled openness to deepening defense cooperation with Riyadh. The Saudi Air Force flies a mix of fighter aircraft including Boeing F-15s, European Tornados and Typhoons.
The F-35, built with stealth technology that allows it to evade enemy detection, is considered the world’s most advanced fighter jet. Israel has operated the aircraft for nearly a decade, building multiple squadrons, and remains the only Middle Eastern country to possess the weapons system.
